Thanks Ted, I found this a very interesting letter. In particular the chart which John kindly explained to me how it was arrived at.
 
2x2x2=8
3x3x3=27
1x1x1=1 and so forth.

Also interesting about the last column #7 is that the 153 comes from the
same numbers reversed in column #6, 351.
 
You will also notice that for every column (except the first number, 231)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     the total ultimately adds to 9 if you keep adding the digits. 9 signifies finality.
This chart would  appear to be very special indeed with finality stamped on
each of the 7 columns.
 
All the seven column totals add to 3,042.
 
3,042 = 2 x 3^ x 13^
 
I can't see any real significance in that though.
