Some people have questioned why all the __ with prophecy and study of current events shouldn't we just go about being good Christians and not be bothered by such things?

Christ plainly told us to watch and discern the signs of the times.  Simply put we are commanded by our Lord to watch for these things so that we will be prepared.  Furthermore, those who are watching shall be blessed Luke 12:37.
 
 

Mt 16:3
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern * the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?
 

Mt 24:3    And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: 33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. 34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. 36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. 45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. 48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; 49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; 50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, 51 And shall cut F47 him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
 
 

Luke 12:37
Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
Mt 24:42    Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
Mt 24:43    But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watch ed, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
Mt 25:13    Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Mr 13:34    For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.

1Th 5:6    Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

Re 3:3    Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Re 16:15    Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watch eth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
