Separately, Microsoft released patches Tuesday to fix serious flaws in elements of its Windows operating system that could allow an attacker to take complete control of another user's computer. One fix patches a vulnerability in its Internet Explorer browser, while another fix is for a flaw in the way that Microsoft's Windows Media Player processes certain files.

Both of those flaws carry the company's most serious "critical" rating.
