"The Simpsons and the Rapture"
Though I don't condone the messages in the Simpsons
episodes, it is interesting to me how many Bible references there are and
have been throughout the years, including tonight's message after the Superbowl.
In a way, I feel like the Simpsons represent the typical American family
in how little they know about the Bible and "religion" overall.
More specifically, I can think of at least three "rapture"
references in the episodes over the past few years. Tonight, as Homer is
passing the local church, the message board outside the church says, "Rapture
alert level: Orange". The following show on Fox also made an "Orange alert
level comment".
The following passage in Isaiah is basically the Lord
saying, "Short of appearing in front of men directly and saying, 'You need
to know me', what more could I have done for men to know how serious this
matter is?: The messages are everywhere on tv, in movies, songs, books,
etc....
And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah,
judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. What could have been
done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I
looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take
away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall
thereof, and it shall be trodden down: And I will lay it waste: it shall
not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I
will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. Isaiah 5:3-6
