Here is the summation of an article I read.  The garden of Eden stretched from the tigris to the Nile(sidon).  The would make it 1500 square miles with present day Jerusalem right in the middle.  The tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil were “ in the midst” of the garden.  The tree of life, according to this article, was where the temple was built and the holy of holies sat, and will sit again one day, and the tree of knowledge (where the first sin took place) was the exact spot were Jesus was crucified.  That is why Jerusalem is so important to God, and thus the Jews and Christians.  It is also the exact specification for the new Jerusalem to be placed by God.  “I will restore these things as they once were” (cant remember where I read it exactly, but know it is in there).  This would make perfect sense with Gods perfection.
