J'lem engineer to order Rambam Bridge closed

Temporary wooden structure poses risk to public, surrounding buildings due to possibility of collapse, fire, letter says.
The Jerusalem municipal engineer said it intends to order the Rambam Bridge linking the Western Wall Plaza to the Temple Mount closed immediately, citing the danger it poses to the public.
Late last month, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu at the last minute delayed plans to start rebuilding the Rambam Bridge because of Egyptian and Jordanian concerns.

Previous work on the bridge has sparked widespread rioting and violence in both east Jerusalem and the Arab world due to the sensitive location.
Construction on the Rambam Bridge in 2007 sparked protest marches in Jordan, as well as calls for a third intifada.

Egypt Warns Israel over Temple Mount Gate
"We are receiving warning messages from the Egyptians, because the Muslim Brotherhood is exerting pressure on them," Rivlin told German Ambassador to Israel Andreas Michaelis, who met him in Rivlin's bureau Monday. The Muslim Waqf, which controls the area atop the Temple Mount, has demanded that Israel refrain from renovating and rebuilding the walkway, which Jews use to access the Mount. Jordan, too, has warned Israel in the matter.

Arab concerns delay Temple Mount project Thursday, December 1, 2011

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office called on the municipality of Jerusalem to delay the scheduled demolition of the Rambam Bridge, a covered wooden ramp that leads from the Western Wall Plaza to the Temple Mount compound, after Egyptian and Jordanian officials expressed their concerns.

The demolition had been set to begin Nov. 26.

Jordan and Egypt said the demolition could ignite violent protests in their countries, which could spill over into the West Bank.

It was installed in 2004 as a temporary measure after the original ramp was damaged by weather and a small earthquake.

The Muslim Wakf, which is in charge of Islamic religious sites, claims that the Rambam/Mughrabi Bridge belongs to Muslims and that Israel has no right to embark on construction in the area.

Non-Muslims are permitted to enter the site only through the Rambam Gate.

Jordan warns Israel over Temple Mount ramp closure

"Jordan rejects any Israeli attempt to affect Jerusalem's holy sites, identity and heritage, including the Rambam Gate" that leads to the compound's Western Wall, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said.

The kingdom, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, "is in daily contact with the Israeli side to make sure it does not change the status quo of the gate,."

Jordan's powerful Islamists have condemned the city council's decision.

Last month, Amman warned that any Israeli "threats and aggressions" against the holy site would lead to "endless" violence in the Middle East.

MKs: Let My People Ascend to Temple Mount

Parliamentarians lash out at decision to close Temple Mount to Jews because of Rambam Gate renovations.

Jews are not allowed to ascend to the Temple Mount, ostensibly because the bridge to the Rambam Gate (also known as the Mughrabim Gate) is unsafe and is to undergo renovation. Deputy Knesset Speaker MK Danny Danon (Likud) wants an urgent hearing to be held in the Knesset's Interior Committee to solve the problem posthaste.

Jews who arrived at the Mount Sunday were blocked by police who told them that the Jerusalem municipality deems the bridge unsafe for use and that Jews cannot enter the Mount by any other entrance.

"There is no reason that the state of Israel, whose capital is Jerusalem, will close off the Temple Mount, which is the bastion of Judaism in Israel and the entire world, and is one of the central pillars of the state of Israel," Danon stated.

The decision to close off the Mount to Jews is causing a public storm in Israel and a solution must be found immediately, he said, in a request to the Knesset Presidium to allow the urgent hearing. He noted that when the Rambam Gate was closed in 2007, Jews were temporarily instructed to use the Shalshelet Gate.

Yehuda Glick: Reassess Absurd Temple Mount Regulations  12/8/11

Yehuda Glick, Chairman of the Foundation for the Heritage of the Temple Mount responded to the decision of the city engineer to close the Moghrabi Bridge leading to the Temple Mount. “The engineer is right. It is unthinkable to endanger the many Jews and tourists who ascend the flimsy bridge every day.

"We call upon the government to take this opportunity and reassess the absurd Temple Mount ascent regulations. The Mount has 12 gateways open 24 hours a day for Muslims, while the Jews are allowed only one gate for 3 hours a day 5 days a week, and are not even allowed to pray at their holiest site when they ascend.”

Lunar Eclipse on Shabbat Will Be Visible from Israel on 12/10/2011,

This eclipse also gave observers an extra special treat,  giving skywatchers a spectacular view of a supersized, reddened moon.

Jewish tradition has mixed views on the mystical and eschatological meaning of lunar eclipses. On the one hand, the Talmud (Tractate Sukkah 29a) says that lunar eclipses are a sign of Divine wrath against the Jewish people for moral failings, while solar eclipses are a bad sign for non-Jewish nations;

On the other hand, Jewish tradition repeatedly says that astrological and astronomical signs do not affect the Jewish people.

Rockets hit Israel after fighting flares in Gaza

JERUSALEM (AP) — Palestinian militants launched three rockets into Israel on Friday, the Israeli military said.  The latest exchange followed several days of violence in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
Earlier Friday, Israel carried out multiple airstrikes against Hamas facilities.

On Wednesday, an Israeli airstrike hit a group of militants in Gaza, killing one and wounding two others. Israel said it targeted militant squads preparing to fire rockets into southern Israel.

And on Thursday, Israeli aircraft fired missiles at a car near a crowded park in Gaza City, killing two militants, including one from Hamas' military wing, and wounding five bystanders. Israel says the militants were planning to infiltrate Israel to carry out attacks.

The strikes Thursday touched off rocket fire from Gaza on southern Israel.
