CHANUKIAH CANDLE LIGHTING GUIDEChanukkah (Hebrew meaning "dedication") is an eight-day festivity (Kislev 25 – Tevet 2) in memoriam of the triumph of Judah the Maccabee (Makkabee) over Antiochus Epiphanes and the ensuing rededication of the Temple and altar. Judah and his brothers reserved this period to praise of the Lord and thanksgiving. After the ruination of the Temple, the festival was affiliated with the miracle of the cruse of one days worth of oil which burned for eight days [Shabbat 21b], and the duty of kindling lights was instituted [Maoz Tzur]. One light is kindled on the first night and an extra one added each succeeding night. The eight-branched lamp (menorah) fabricated to hold these lights, has often been the subject of artistry. Work is not disallowed. The dedication offering of the princes (Numbers 7:1-8:4) is read from the Torah in the synagogue, while in the liturgy, Hallel is recited and a description of the Chanukkah miracle inserted in each Amidah. It is customary to spend the evening in various games (spinning the Chanukkah top, known as the trendel or dredel).
First, set out the appropriate number of candles to be lit corresponding with the respective day of the 8 days. The first candle is placed at one’s right, as one is facing the Chanukiah. Subsequent candles are placed to the left of it, one additional candle for each of the eight days. The LIT shammash candle ALWAYS kindles the first new candle first. Earth’s satellite, our moon, is illuminated and darkened from right to left as one looks at it in the night sky. Thus Hebrew, having lunar months as their measure on months, is written from right to left in following the heavenly sequence.
Light the shammash (servant) candle, which represents the Messiah Yeshua (He is Adonai come to the earth to redeem humanity from its sins). While holding the shammash candle, recite the Barukah (blessing) saying, "He is the Light of the World". Another atendee then reads Mark 10:44-45 ‘Whoever wants to be first must be servant of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
While holding the Shammash candle, the celebrant recites the following blessing in Hebrew and English: "Baruch atah Adonai Eloheynu Melekh ha-olam asher kidshanu bamitzvotav vetzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Chanukah." "Blessed are you, O Lord(s) our God(s), King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the light of the Chanukah (and to let our light shine before others)". Continuing, "Baruch atah Adonai Eloheynu Melekh ha-olam sheheyanu v'ke'manu v'heegeeanu lazman ha-zeh" "Blessed are you, Oh Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has performed miracles for our forefathers in those days at this time". Continuing further, "Baruch atah Adonai Eloheynu Melekh ha-olam, she-hasah nisim la-atotainu bayamim ha-ham bazman ha-zeh". "Blessed are you, Oh Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has kept us alive and sustained us and enabled us to reach this season".Then, light the other candles with the shammash candle. Each night of lighting, if applicable, invite a different person to read the Scriptures designated for each night of the 8 day festival.
Sing Maoz Tsur ("Rock of Ages") and other Chanukah songs you might come across, celebrating the coming of the Light of the World.
