With Rick Warren claiming false accusation based on blog mis-information (World Net Daily, December 11), many will cheer and say Mr. Warren was right all along. They will say he is not a disciple of Robert Schuller. But the fact is his wife is a key speaker at Robert Schuller's high-profile career enhancing "Rethink" seminar early next year (2008). "Rethink" is about worldly wisdom (Murdoch & Larry King, etc.). More devaluation of the truth. And then the very next day in WND, false statements from Warren about his Syria visit are exposed. What to think?
But there is a bigger issue-- the way he treats God's glorious gospel. He robs it of it's glory by ignoring (or denying) the fact that we are all "dead in Adam", and "under sin", and that "there is none righteous, no not one". Without those truths, the glory of God's grace is eclipsed, and every lost man is elevated to a status of being "delighted in" by God (PDL), even though the Apostle Paul clearly says that every lost man is dead in trespasses and sins until God in mercy makes him alive with Christ.
I don't trust any "Preacher" that does not handle the Word of God reverently. I have read Mr. Warren's book. Be careful lest you approve of a man that whose own words run outside of the true gospel of the grace of Christ to helpless, dead sinners. The truth is slipping away from the church's consciousness from the likes of him. By silence to original sin and the need for the Cross, the gospel is redefined. Is that what "rethinking" is all about? We know what Paul said about enemies of the Cross! Beware.
People say, "Look at Purpose Driven 'good' that has been done". The devil is content to see "good" things happen, if it brings truth's devaluation. The devil is in it when preachers play fast and loose with the Word of God with a mistaken childish liberty to quote the gospel loosely. It is so common with many of these 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation churchmen. They have heard everything a million times, and they have seen hypocrisy among those who hold fundamental beliefs, so they not only despise those who cling to the Word, but they themselves fly by the seat of their pants with a flimsy foundation of true scriptural knowledge. "Close enough" is fine as long as people are being "helped".
Their knowledge of truth is mostly from hearsay and thus, very inaccurate in God's court. They know the bible stories from all their lives in Sunday School and sitting in the pew while growing up. I doubt they know the value of eating the Word-- lovingly letting the Word speak to them according to the Spirit of Life. Their speech and mannerisms express no reverent need to know the Lord…like they have heard it all before…like they know the formula for success…like they don't need the foundation--it is assumed and taken for granted-- and besides, there are too many "things" to do.
As for me--Having been saved by grace alone, I have no cause in myself to assume anything. I cling to the foundation of the Word of Christ's grace every day, I restate the gospel to myself and others constantly, repetitively teaching it, knowing that this most precious truth could slip from my embrace. Heb 2:1,2
I am just a common layperson who has loved the gospel and admired the glory of God's workmanship for the last 28 years. These childish preachers with their humanistic view of Jesus have said nothing that resonates with my spirit. They are wells without water. It's time to stand for the truth. May the Church be zealous and repent!
