"The bulwark of Psalm 48"

Dear Pastor Riley, I was reading your excellent post today and saw something else.

Then in this same Psalm in verse 13, the Psalmist was inspired of God to write, “Mark ye well her bulwarks [Zion…Jerusalem], consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.”  Notice the words I have underlined carefully, then take your Hebrew Lexicon or Concordance and look up the meaning of those words.  The word “following” in this verse is translated from the Hebrew word, “acharon.”  This Hebrew word literally means, “hinder; last; hindermost; latter; rereward; uttermost.”  See Gesenius Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon, page 33, Strong’s No. 314.  In other words, the latter part of Psalm 48:13] in the Hebrew text literally  reads, “…..that ye may tell it to the last generation.”

This made me think of the recent archeological discoveries in Jerusalem that show the walls (bulwarks) of palaces that clearly show evidence that the Jews were in Jerusalem, in spite of the destruction by the Palestinians to hide the fact. Donna Danna has sent in several letters recently about this, but I am not giving links to them here. It seems to me that those very palace walls being discovered in this generation, which is following the first one alive when the fig tree put forth leaves, is in my opinion, another way of interpreting the same passage. A double fulfillment of prophecy.

Strong's word 2430 for bulwark means an entrenchment. Having been in the construction business for the past 11 years, building foundations, I know what entrenchments are. They are steel-fortified concrete footings dug deep and wide and filled first to support the weight of the walls to be built upon them. If they are properly built, they will stand for centuries.

Webster gives this definition for bulwark:

a solid wall-like structure raised for defense

I am reminded of the great hymn A Mighty Fortress is our God. by Martin Luther, whose words read:

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.
