per Donna Danna's post of some time ago, Uranus' rings will again be
'edge-on' to the sun, perfectly, on December 7th, 2007 after 42 years.

note that they say that the last time this happened (42 years ago)
Astronomers didn't even know Uranus had rings at all.

Uranus is the only planet in our solar system that rotates on it's axis
at about a 90 degree angle. it's orbital path and it's axis of rotation
are almost parallel. this is why the rings appear straight up and down.
the planet appears to be 'lying down' (my terminology) as it goes around
the sun.
