The globalist Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) may now be in full control of American foreign policy as its members are shaping policy and events that impact the international stage. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Robert Gates, the Bush Administration’s nominee for Secretary of Defense and a member of the CFR, for the first time broke a longstanding 40 year agreement of ambiguity between Israel and the United States by confirming Israel had nuclear weapons. In addition, Gates said that no one can promise that Iran will not use nuclear weapons against Israel—a statement interpreted by many as indicating the United States would sit on the sidelines rather than protect Israel.

The second coup de tat of the CFR is the Iraq Study Group Report. Hailed by liberals and terrorists as a long-awaited “I told you so,” the report called for negotiations with terrorist sponsors Syria and Iran and the tying together of the Palestinian issue with the Iraq war. The report left the strong impression that Israel was at the center of the entire Middle East unrest and that America should be negotiating with Israel’s enemies rather than supporting Israel. The leaders of the Iraq Study Group—James Baker and Lee Hamilton—are both members of the CFR. Baker has gone so far as suggesting a Middle East peace negotiation in Madrid, Spain with Arab enemies of Israel, without Israel’s participation.

Meantime, President Bush appears to be backing away from the suggestions of the Iraq Study Group to have direct talks with Syria and Iran. He has said that there will be no discussions with Iran until it stops its nuclear enrichment nor with Syria until it stops trying to overthrow the government in Lebanon. But key Council on Foreign Relations members in policy-driving positions may overtake the President’s opposition as they continue to shape events. For example, CFR member and long time advisor to presidents, Brent Scowcroft reportedly emerged as a mover and shaker behind the Iraq Study Group report. He is a mentor to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, also a member of the CFR.

Perspective: CFR’s expert on Israeli-Palestinian relations, Henry Siegman was quoted as saying, “if you really want to stop the violence and get a peace agreement and put the parties on a road toward a peace process, no one except Hamas can deliver.” These people believe that the terrorist organizations who have said Israel should not exist and are arming against Israel each day should be trusted to bring peace to the region. With these people shaping foreign policy, the only sure bet is appeasement and war. Jeremiah 8:15 says, “We looked for peace, but no good came.” Seek Christ that you are not deceived.
