Israeli archaeologist Yizhar Hirschfeld, however, has established something of
a new archaeological record by uncovering in the Dead Sea an elaborately
formulated curse only two years old.

Two small packets, containing parchment wrapped in cloth that had been soaked
in preservatives and folded inside sheets of lead, were retrieved close to
the shore of the landlocked sea.

"Oh God almighty," it began in neat Arabic script. "I beg you God to destroy
Ariel Sharon, son of Devorah, son of Eve. Destroy all his supporters, loyal
aides and confidants, and all those who love him and whom he loves among the
human beings and among devils and demons.

"Destroy them all, small and big, male and female, kings and subjects, leaders
and flock, soldiers who are all satans."

It is apparent from his reference to the "new" Israeli chief of staff, Moshe
Yaalon, that the curse was written between March 2002, when Yaalon was
appointed, and August 2002, when the packets were found.
