An interesting thing about the 1776 "Christmas" crossing of the Delaware is that the American soldiers attempted it because many of them didn't celebrate it as the German mercenaries and the British did.  Therefore they could move while their enemies were drinking and partying.  Not what we have come to believe, is it?
Until 1850, Christmas was illegal in Boston, as a popish, pagan holiday.
