"Isaac, New Orleans and Southern Decadence"

Isaac, New Orleans and Southern Decadence

Decadent:  being in a state of decline or decay; marked by or providing unrestrained gratification; self-indulgent.

Tropical storm/hurricane Isaac is bearing down on the Gulf, and is at this time projected to cross land near New Orleans.  This is déjà vu for many of us doves who watched closely as Hurricane Katrina tore through New Orleans seven years ago.  Now my prayer is that New Orleans and surrounding regions will be spared the worst of Isaac - this is in God’s hands!  We also need to pray for Christians to be protected and able to assist in supporting the community.

There was a link between Hurricane Katrina and United States support for removal of Israeli residents in Gaza.  But there is another concern - Southern Decadence (the official title for the event!).  Southern Decadence is a week-long, predominantly gay-male event held in New Orleans, Louisiana, including with a parade through the French Quarter on the Sunday before Labor Day.  In 2012 the event will be held from Wednesday 29 August (when Hurricane Isaac is expected to reach land) to Monday 3 September.  More details are on the Wikipedia link below.

In 2005 Southern Decadence was officially cancelled as a result of Hurricane Katrina, although a very small group of residents in the French Quarter celebrated the event anyway.  Seven years on and there appears to be little evidence of true repentance - and God’s greater judgments are at the door.  Interestingly, Sunday 2 September 2012 is Father’s Day in Australia! What a sad coincidence, from a far away country.  This is not just a New Orleans event - according to Wikipedia, crowds for Southern Decadence range from 100,000 to 300,000 revelers from across the United States and around the world.  There may still be time for repentance, but time is getting short.

2 Peter 3:8-10

With the Lord one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.  9 The Lord does not delay, but He is long-suffering (extraordinarily patient) toward you, not desiring that any should perish, but that all should turn to repentance.  10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.

Maranatha!  Denis
