Comet Elenin
The long period comet 2010 X1 (Elenin) is currently low in the western evening sky, and brightening all the time as it heads towards the Sun, and perihelion on 10 September (it will enter the SOHO field between September 22-30).
It is currently at mag. +9 and has a coma three to four arcminutes in size. The prospects are of it being a possible naked-eye object in the morning sky in October, although the Northern Hemisphere is favoured on this occasion.
As darkness falls around 6.30pm mid-month the comet is just over 20 degrees up, three degrees north of beta Virginis and sets by 8.20pm.
At the end of August, it has moved south and lies four degrees south-west of Porrima (gamma Virginis), with the crescent moon in close attendance.
PERSONAL NOTE - I have verified this info with Stellarium astronomy software.
On 31 August 2011, Elenin looks to be closest to the Crescent Moon, on my software screen, as Elenin courses through Virgo.
However, Elenin will be at 0.97 AU, while the Moon will be at 0.002 AU.
1 AU is approximately the distance from the Sun to the Earth. But I am not sure if we may really get to "see" Elenin with our naked eyes on 31 August 2011.
