"The Colony on Discovery Ch"
Has anyone seen this show? I'm watching the
first season on On Demand. They are doing 'an experiment' with
volunteers. It's supposed to mimic how people react after extreme
circumstances, using real life situations to create the same feelings
in the people. Of course, they are given a huge warehouse to live in
with all sorts of goodies to use...with a mix of people who know all
sorts of things that the average person would not know. They are given
items that you normally would not find in an extreme emergency (like
after Katrina, or a huge earthquake)...they only have the 10
'colonists' and they get a few people challenging him (not like the
huge crowds you'd have after a real tragic event). I watched most of
the Season 1 eps, since they'll end on the 5th, but I can't even tell
you if I like it or not. It's got some interesting bits of info for
people who might be caught in a bad situation...but most of the stuff
is just not going to happen. They 'found' bags of charcoal and sand in
the warehouse so they could filter the water they got from the Los
Angeles River (ick)...and just happened to have a bank of 20 batteries
to use. They have a mixed group of people who know pretty much
everything between them (fabricators, engineers, nurse, doc, and all
other kinds of skills).
One ep had them meet up with
'Missionaries'...they were actors, and it was very obvious they did not
really believe/know the Bible. It was part of the experiment to deal
with one member who was a believer. Of course, they highlighted the
fact that this same man was quick to throw out his 'belief' when it
came to strangers when he rifled through some newcomers' bags. As if
being cautious and trying to keep the group safe from possible danger
was 'unChristian'. *ugh*
Anyway, since we were talking about
food and water storage, I thought this was interesting. If it were more
real to life, and showed just things that could help people in hardship
situations, it would be worth the time and effort...but it's just
another 'reality show' which is probably going to make those involved
need therapy afterward! *one man was a veteran of wars, and when one
team member was 'taken out', he was distraught at 'leaving a man
behind'. They had no idea where he went (the producers just removed him
from the 'experiment')...if the people ever do stop and say, 'this is
just part of the game', they edit it out.
Anyway, just wondering
if anyone else had seen it. The main point is, they (the producers),
start each episode with the statement that we ARE going to have some
sort of extreme, tragic 'post apocalyptic' event, just that
proclamation is frightening.
Blessings~
