"Re: Breadwinner"
People think that is a myth.
Seriously...I've been told on other message boards (not
Christian/Conservative ones), that I am wrong about that type scenario.
They say/think it is something 'the Rightwing nuts' made up to scare
people away from Government 'help'.
I live in a small farming
community, the town is the 'County Seat', and we are known for the
dubious distinction of having the highest unwed pregnancy rate in the
State. The upside to that is that we don't have abortion services here,
so less babies are being killed...but the reality is, we have a town of
teenage/20-something 'breadwinners'.
But, we have something that
this letter does not have! We also have, in our midst, a 'Native
American' "Rancheria" (it is not considered a Reservation, because it
is not ONE tribe, it is a group that was established from stragglers
from a number of tribes back in the '20s). Anyway, thanks to Atlantic
City money (and now Vegas), they built first a 'Bingo Hall', and in
less than 25 years have a huge casino with a hotel out there. How does
that effect the local 'breadwinners'? Well, according to conversations
I've over-heard in the grocery store line (this one was from a very
young obviously pregnant black girl with a mixed race toddler in a
stroller to a group of black, hispanic and one white girl), 'you need
to get a baby by one of the tribal guys,..then you get a check from
them too....you don't get as much, cuz they go by percentage of how
Indian it is...now with these two (she motioned the baby & her
tummy) I get this much....".
So, not only do we have 'breadwinners' in our community, we have the 'jackpot' of 'getting a baby by a tribal guy'. wow.
Scary world.
Blessings~
