Tongues of Firejust a little observation ....Recently, a long-respected talk-show hostess suffered a major blow of her own making: she used the "N....." word (slang used to offensively replace the word "negro") Not once, but several times in a rant. It cost her her reputation.I cater to certain sites that are spiritual. Five Doves is one of them. But increasingly, they too often become infected, not only with viruses and worms, but also comments and articles that lash out in anger. Simple disagreement turns into confrontations that are sometimes ugly and unChristian.Writing is fun. It gives us an outlet to share and express our innermost feelings and inform others of our views and opinions. But writing can also be deadly--especially on the internet. It is there one can hide behind anonymity and use it as a means of venting frustrations by offering a blow by blow of words meant to humiliate, criticize, or belittle someone when we disagree. It is to be expected from the unregenerated--but from Christians?More and more I see this happening: Tit for tat--a rather morbid way of murder by keyboard!"Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is there is c onfusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is above is first pure, then peaceable gentle and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits without partiality and without hypocrisy. (James 3:11-17)Jesus gave warning:"Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement. For by thy words thou shalt be justified and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."(Mat 12:36-37)Like most of us, I have a registry cleaner program on my computer. It seems that I have to use it more and more nowadays just tocontinually surf the web. But even then, the program itself gets "glitches" by telling me everything is "fine", when after scanning through it anyway I discover I have a major problem that needed to be fixed. Things are not always as they seem... The Book of Acts tells us the story about an extraordinary event. On the Day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came into the upper room where some 120 people were awaiting Jesus' promise to give them power. When it came, it was described as a "rushing, mighty wind" and "tongues of fire" sat upon each of them as they were filled with the Holy Ghost. They were soon found outside that upper room, going through the streets of Jerusalem speaking the mighty works of God in tongues they had never learned. Thousands came to Christ on that day.God help us to ignite our tongues, that we may rush into the streets and cyberspace of our world with the same...MARY E. ADAMSAugust 2010
