"Re: Overdraft Fees"
I enjoyed reading that article. I was
involved in the exact same thing at my bank. We jointly own a
business with my dad and we have an expense account. We would buy
small items on our debit card and larger items with company
checks. My bank which is Family Security Credit Union would hold
all debits and process them together as one debit. We never
noticed this until one day when we had a very low balance. We
received a settlement later than anticipated and became
overdrawn. I noticed right away they had charged us for all
debits processed even though I had money to cover everything exact the
last debit. I called the bank, horrified because I had sent out
checks that were taken from the settlement and I knew that I would
become overdrawn again before I received any more settlements.
All in all it was hundreds of dollars in fees that were taken
out. I was overdrawn three times within the next week. I
was so angry, but everyone was basically telling me that this was a
standard and legal action by the bank. I decided that I had
enough. I contacted the BBB made a report. I also contacted
the NCUA which investigated this. Not long after I began the
process I noticed that the bank had stopped that process. I
haven't been charged collectively for separate debits since then, and
Family Security sent out notifications recently where you have to sign
up if you want them to pay for debits when your balance is
negative. As you can imagine I opted out. I am so glad that
people are fighting these policies now, because for too long banks have
been allowed to completely run over people.
