In reply to your question in your post at http://www.fivedoves.com/letters/aug2010/dianeg816.htm the year 2011 does not begin on Rosh Hoshanah, 9/09/2010; it begins on January 1st like all the other years on our modern day calendars.  However, the Jewish civil year of 5771 begins on 9/09/2010 and ends on 9/28/2011.  Also the 1st day of Rosh Hoshanah in 2011 is 9/29 which would begin the next civil year on the Jewish calendar of 5772 which ends on 9/16/2012. You may be confusing the year of 2011 with the Jewish Civil year of 5771.
