I think you are slightly off target with looking at Digital Angel and the Verichip.  I believe that you are only looking at the foundation of what will become the mark, and not the mark itself.  Right now there is a company called Somark that has developed an RFID tattoo that is being implemented in the cattle industry.  Each tattoo takes 10 - 15 seconds to apply and doesn't require someone with a medical license.  They also have it working with "invisible" ink.  I believe the scanners see the style or shape of the design as opposed to any binary encoding.  It is much cheaper, more reliable and much more efficient to administer then the bio-chip.
