"Mark's article on amniocentesis"
When I became pregnant with my 4th child, I was 39 years
old. The doctor wanted to do the amniocentesis. When I asked
why, he said to determine if my child was Down's Syndrome. If the
baby tested positive for that, we could terminate the pregnancy early.
He told me to go home and think about it.
I looked at the various statistics about the probability
of this occurring in this pregnancy thinking it would be good to know and
be prepared for a special needs child. Then I read the statistics
on the number of miscarriages that occurred as a result of the amniocentesis.
The odds were greater that I would miscarry than that I would have a Down's
Syndrome. I declined the test with no regrets.
I gave birth to a very intelligent and handsome young
man (now 22 years old) and 18 months after his birth, had a very intelligent
and beautiful daughter (now 20 years old). God is so good.
