Cindy Sheehan: Grief with an Agenda
Cindy Sheehan is now quoting her son Casey, who was killed in Iraq, with comments he has passed on to her from beyond the grave.Sheehan said in a speech 'celebrating' her return to Crawford, Texas, "I can just hear him saying, 'George Bush, you are really an idiot. You didn't know what you were doing when you killed me. You didn't know what you were getting into.'"
A couple of days ago, she announced that her son Casey was not killed by terrorists, but instead was killed by 'freedom fighters'.
"You know that the president says Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism, don't you believe that?" asked Mark Knoller of CBS, surrounded by a host of other reporters.
"No, because it's not true," Sheehan replied. "You know Iraq was no threat to the United States of America until we invaded. I mean they're not even a threat to the United States of America. Iraq was not involved in 9-11, Iraq was not a terrorist state. But now that we have decimated the country, the borders are open, freedom fighters from other countries are going in, and they [American troops] have created more terrorism by going to an Islamic country, devastating the country and killing innocent people in that country. The terrorism is growing and people who never thought of being car bombers or suicide bombers are now doing it because they want the United States of America out of their country."
Mrs. Sheehan has pretty much gone over the deep end, with liberal groups massaging her grief and then pointing it like a gun at the Bush administration.
Just how stable is she? Mrs. Sheehan has recreated her son in an image that none of the rest of her family finds remotely recognizable. Casey Sheehan reenlisted specifically because he wanted to go to Iraq and 'make a difference', according to all accounts (except Cindy's)
But according to his mother, Casey wasn't a hero. He was a victim. Moreover, she said, "If I was thinking straight, which I wasn't, I never would have allowed a military funeral, and I wouldn't have buried him in his uniform."
Her reason for not further dishonoring both his memory and his sacrifice? "I just basically stayed sitting on my couch, crying and drinking for a week."
Once Mrs. Sheehan recovered from her hangover, she met with President Bush, whom she described as, "sincere about wanting freedom for the Iraqis. I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith."
After that meeting, in which she is shown being kissed on the cheek by President Bush, she remembered a couple of other things she wanted to tell the president, and demanded another meeting.
"Quit saying that U.S. troops died for a noble cause in Iraq, unless you say, 'well, except for Casey Sheehan.' Don't you dare spill any more blood in Casey's name. You do not have permission to use my son's name.
"And the other thing I want him to tell me is 'just what was the noble cause Casey died for?' Was it freedom and democracy? Bullsh--! He died for oil. He died to make your friends richer. He died to expand American imperialism in the Middle East. We're not freer here, thanks to your Patriot Act. Iraq is not free. You get America out of Iraq and Israel out of Palestine and you'll stop the terrorism," she said.
What is remarkable about this story isn't that Cindy Sheehan has made a mockery of her's son's sacrifice or that she is mad at George Bush.
What is remarkable is how cynically her grief has been exploited by the agenda driven leftists in the media and Congress. They clearly couldn't care less about either Sheehan or her son. All that matters is that she repeats their talking points.
And that doesn't seem to bother anyone.
