The Summer Olympics 2004
Jim Bramlett
Aug 14, 2004

Dear friends:

"That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done"(Ecclesiastes 1:9, NIV).

Last night was the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics 2004 from Athens, Greece.  You may have seen it on TV.  It was seen by billions worldwide,

The crowd was huge,  The colors were beautiful.  The artsy theater aspects were impressive, emphasizing Greek mythology, history, and culture.

Some thoughts came to me concerning the times in which we live and I was struck with some
possible parallels:

1.  The Greek culture was dominant when Jesus came the first time.  By way of the Olympics and worldwide television, the Greek culture has become dominant in 2004, near His return.  "That which has been is that which will be..."

2.  The false gods of Greek paganism were dominant when Jesus came the first time.  Now, the
false gods of Greek paganism are again made prominent through worldwide television today.
The prideful demons behind these Greek gods are probably jubilant at the great worldwide
publicity they are getting in 2004!

3.  In the New Testament, the term "Greek" is sometimes translated as "Gentile."  (E.g. Romans
1:16). The Greeks symbolized the whole non-Jewish world.  The false gods of Gentile paganism
are prominent today -- largely through daily television.

4.  God gave the New Testament to us in Greek and the gospel went forth to the world in Greek,
translated in many languages.  Now, nearly 2,000 years later, the whole world is again centered
back on Greece.

5.  Last night, in the impressive "Parade of Nations," thousands of athletes marched by with their
countrymen, each country with its own dress and colors.  Shockingly, even though not a country,
"Palestine" was among the "nations," carrying their own "flag."  The people applauded
generously.  But there is no nation of Palestine.  This was a cave in to political correctness as
seen by the many anti-Jewish nations of the world.  World madness.

6.  By contrast, when Israel, a legitimate nation, marched by, carrying the Israeli flag, the crowd
was noticeably subdued.  World madness.

7.  It was announced that an Iranian wrestler had decided to drop out of the Olympics because he had been pared with an Israeli as his first opponent, and he refused to recognize Israel as a
nation.  World madness.

There may be other parallels and interesting points, but that is all I can think of this morning.
