Putting all seriousness aside, perhaps Star Trek TOS can give us a clue as to what happened to our Imposter Supreme.

 

In the episode, "The City on the Edge of Forever," Kirk tries to explain the origin of Spock's ears to a l940's era policeman.

 

I propose that what was offered up as fiction was actually a statement of fact, namely that a certain Barry got his head caught in a mechanical rice picker!  LOL.
