What an afternoon being at the Riley Burn Unit. We will never be the same, as
would anyone. There was a rumor that Josh had passed on Sat night all
over Greene Co and we had to face that 4 times before we got out of town and say
'NO, Brian (our nephew) would have told us if he had passed'. And we kept going
to Riley Children's Hospital.
There had been a cookout in Scotland the
night before and the boys were trying to revive the fire and got a small flame
going again. They said they needed to get some gas on it to get it going. Nick
had a gas can and Josh (our almost Nephew, but he already is in our hearts)
grabbed the can from him. A neighbor lady told them to stop messing with it and
Nick yelled at her. She went in side and the explosion was just after that.
Nick's sisters were there and told Nick to stop. The girls were right there but
had no injury. Josh put some gas on the fire and put the gas down and was bent
near it when it exploded.
The explosion was heard all over Scotland.
Our friend from Harvest, Bill Thomas, saw Josh running on fire. He put him out
with own shirt. Another man put out Nick. The town was shut down and 2
helicopters came in.
Josh's Mom is a hard worker. She and Brian were
working under their trailer doing some repairs before moving in. She was in
contact with him on the phone all the time. He had just called 10 min befor and
asked if he could stay another hour. He was playing with Nick and his sisters
and their grandma was there to watch them. Sometimes, things just happen.
Lisa (Crays) is a great Mom and her boys are more than precious to
her. Her main concern in her life is her 2 sons. She is extremely
conscientious about the boys. She is an awesome person and she has been in our
family for a short time but we love her and admire her so much. We are so glad
she is here with Brian.
The anguish of both families is something
beyond measure.
Sat night Josh was given zero percent chance of
living. He was burned 3rd degree plus over 100% of his body and no child has
ever survived that for Riley. Yesterday he had some improvements. They give
him 50/50 chance now. They took his burn percentage down to 92% of his body.
His kidneys had almost stopped and yesterday they were at 50%. They were able
to move his bed down to surgery and insert a feeding tube through his stomach
wall and it went well. They were going to do surgery on his eyellids to relieve
pressure.
Josh was not burned inside but Nick was and they do not yet
know the extent of the internal damage. He could not be moved or even turned.
Surgery was done in his bed to try to relieve pressure and get blood to his legs
or they would have to be amputated. They were not sure if he would survive the
surgery, but he did. I heard this morning that his legs were going to be ok.
Praise God.
They have teams of doctors and attendants all over both of
them. They let Larry and I into the room for a second only because we were
there to pray. They were at the point of having to restrict the families of
attendance because there was so much to to and they could not do it if anyone
was in there. They were trying to keep the Unit closed to anyone. It was an
honor of the Lord Jesus to be able to be there but it was something you never
wish anyone would have to see.
Please teach your grandbabies about fire
safety and do fire drills. Teach every child about Stop, Drop, and Roll as
Cowboy Bob used to do on tv with his dog. Raise money for the Burn Unit at
Riley, what a cause! There are 4 beds in the Unit and they are full. One is a
younger boy than these . Then there is a baby. As a newborn, she was just goo
gooing and the garage of the home blew up. She had burns on her face, hands,
etc. The father is/was (not sure if he is still there) in the Burn Unit at
Wishard. She has been there for months now. The Mom of the baby had seen great
progress, even how she looked today.
These boys need a miracle of
survival according to the Drs. And we have seen miracles and believe. They
need your prayers and the parents and families need your prayers for strength to
endure.
One person with the other family contacted Larry Dyer, the
father of 2 local preachers. An awesome man of strong faith. She called him
the 'Biker Guy'. Larry saw him in the waiting room, no one better to have on
your side for prayer. Pastor Jeff is in contact with Brian and in support
there.
May we all keep joinging together in prayer for their miracle.
I'll let you know updates as I find them.
Pat
