"The Doctrine of Balaam"

Further to Laurie Hane's post which reminded me about Rev. Chapters 2 and 3,  I've often wondered what the error of Balaam has to do with God connecting it to the Church in Pergamos. After all, Balaam's issue was in the old testament times and had to do with the Israelites, so what is this warning from the Holy Spirit to that Church of the New Testament?

Revelation 2 : 14 says "But I have a few things against you, because you have those who hold the doctrine of Balaam...."

The bottom line of that doctrine is the key word "compromise." The Pergamos Church that the Holy Spirit was addressing was known as the "Compromising Church." For it to be highlighted by the Spirit of God and pinpointing it to still being practiced by some in His Church merits further investigations. Why would God choose an Old Testament happening to address this particular issue with the N.T. Church?  Could it be that the origins of this doctrine that He is against, actually have its roots from the prophet Balaam and that its still being practised by His modern day saints?

To cut this short, it doesn't take very much to connect this to the twisted/altered OSAS doctrine which in essence, IS God's Will, but is twisted in the same manner as Balaam twisted the truth to give false assurance to the Israelites that it was alright to compromise in a few things and that God would still accept them!

If we were to paraphrase Balaam's doctrine for today, it should go something like this..."assurance of eternal security with God in the midst of CONTINUOUS compromised sinning!" That was the EXACT same message that the man of God Balaam was teaching the people of God and here in revelation 2:14, He's WARNING His Church about this that can come from "servants of God" who teaches it like Balaam did !

This warning is valid for today as well and I'm so glad that it came straight from the Holy Spirit and not from any mere Christian like me! One can still choose to ignore this or take heed.....YOUR Choice! ( but keeping it constructive / objective as bro John says. ) God Bless!
