Conspiracies and the Bible
1. The Conspiracy of Levi and Simeon against the Men of Shechem
"Genesis 34:13 And
the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully,
and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister: 34:14 And they said
unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised;
for that were a reproach unto us: 34:15 But in this will we consent unto
you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised; 34:16
Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters
to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. 34:17
But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take
our daughter, and we will be gone. 34:18 And their words pleased Hamor,
and Shechem Hamor's son." "34:24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son
hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was
circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city. 34:25 And it came
to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob,
Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon
the city boldly, and slew all the males. 34:26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem
his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house,
and went out. 34:27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the
city, because they had defiled their sister. 34:28 They took their sheep,
and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that
which was in the field, 34:29 And all their wealth, and all their little
ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in
the house. 34:30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me
to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites
and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves
together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
34:31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?"
2. The Conspiracy of Sanbalit, Tobiah, and Geshem
Against Nehemiah
"6:1 Now it came to pass when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem
the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall,
and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not
set up the doors upon the gates;) 6:2 That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto
me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the
plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. 6:3 And I sent
messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot
come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to
you? 6:4 Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered
them after the same manner. 6:5 Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me
in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand; 6:6 Wherein
was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that
thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall,
that thou mayest be their king, according to these words. 6:7 And thou hast
also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is
a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these
words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together. 6:8 Then I
sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but
thou feignest them out of thine own heart. 6:9 For they all made us afraid,
saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done.
Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands."
3. The Conspiracy of Shemaiah and Sanbalit
Against Nehemiah
"6:10 Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of
Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet
together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors
of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they
come to slay thee. 6:11 And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who
is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life?
I will not go in. 6:12 And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but
that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had
hired him. 6:13 Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid,
and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report,
that they might reproach me."
4. Conspiracy of Ishmael
Against Gedaliah
"40:13 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains
of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, 40:14
And said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the
Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah
the son of Ahikam believed them not. 40:15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah
spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and
I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore
should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should
be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish? 40:16 But Gedaliah the son
of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing:
for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael. 41:1 Now it came to pass in
the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama,
of the seed royal, and the princes of the king, even ten men with him, came
unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and there they did eat bread
together in Mizpah. 41:2 Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah,
and the ten men that were with him, and smote Gedaliah the son of Ahikam
the son of Shaphan with the sword, and slew him, whom the king of
Babylon had made governor over the land. 41:3 Ishmael also slew all the
Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans
that were found there, and the men of war."
5. The Conspiracy of the prophets of Israel
"22:25 There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the
midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured
souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made
her many widows in the midst thereof. ...22:28 And her prophets have daubed
them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them,
saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken."
6. The assassination conspiracy
Against King Amon
"33:21 Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign,
and reigned two years in Jerusalem. 33:22 But he did that which was evil
in the sight of the LORD, as did Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed
unto all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served
them; 33:23 And humbled not himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father
had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more. 33:24 And his servants
conspired against him, and slew him in his own house."
7. The King Joash's Conspiracy
Against the Zechariah the Priest
"24:20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of
Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus
saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot
prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you. 24:21
And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the
commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD."
8. The Revenge Conspiracy for slaying Zehcariah
Against King Joash
"24:25 And when they were departed from him [Joash], (for they
left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for
the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and
he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not
in the sepulchres of the kings. 24:26 And these are they that conspired
against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the
son of Shimrith a Moabitess."
9./10. The Back-to-back Conspiracies
Against Pekahiah and Pekua
"15:24 And he [Pekahiah the son of Menahem] did that which
was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam
the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. 15:25 But Pekah the son of Remaliah,
a captain of his, conspired against him, and smote him in Samaria, in the
palace of the king's house, with Argob and Arieh, and with him fifty men
of the Gileadites: and he killed him, and reigned in his room.... 15:30
And Hoshea the son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah the son
of Remaliah, and smote him, and slew him, and reigned in his stead, in the
twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah."
11. The assassination Conspiracy of Shallum
Against King Azariah
"15:8 In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah
did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six months.
15:9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his fathers
had done: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who
made Israel to sin. 15:10 And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against
him, and smote him before the people, and slew him, and reigned in his stead."
12. Conspiracy of Zimri
Against King Baasha
"16:9 And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots,
conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk
in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah. 16:10 And Zimri went
in and smote him, and killed him, in the twenty and seventh year of Asa
king of Judah, and reigned in his stead.... 16:16 And the people that were
encamped heard say, Zimri hath conspired, and hath also slain the king:
wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel
that day in the camp. 16:17 And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel
with him, and they besieged Tirzah. 16:18 And it came to pass, when Zimri
saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king's
house, and burnt the king's house over him with fire, and died."
13. Conspiracy of Baasha
Against Nadab king of Israel
"15:25 And Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel
in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned over Israel two years.
15:26 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of
his father, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin. 15:27 And Baasha
the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him;
and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for
Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon."
14. Jehu's conspiracy
Against the King of Israel
"9:13 Then they hasted, and took every man his garment, and
put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew with trumpets, saying,
Jehu is king. 9:14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired
against Joram. (Now Joram had kept Ramothgilead, he and all Israel,
because of Hazael king of Syria."
15. Conspiracy of Jezebel and Ahab
Against Naboth
"21:7 And Jezebel his [Ahab's] wife said unto him, Dost thou
now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart
be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. 21:8 So
she wrote letters in Ahab's name, and sealed them with his seal, and
sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city,
dwelling with Naboth. 21:9 And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim
a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: 21:10 And set two men,
sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst
blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that
he may die. 21:11 And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles
who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them,
and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. 21:12
They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. 21:13 And
there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men
of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of
the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried
him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. 21:14
Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead. 21:15
And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was
dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard
of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth
is not alive, but dead. 21:16 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that
Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth
the Jezreelite, to take possession of it."
16. Eunuchs conspire
Against Jezebel
"9:30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it;
and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.
9:31 And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who
slew his master? 9:32 And he lifted up his face to the window, and said,
Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three
eunuchs. 9:33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down:
and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and
he trode her under foot."
17. King Jehu and eighty men conspire
Against the worshippers of Baal
"10:18 And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said
unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much.
10:19 Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants,
and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to
do to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did
it in subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal.
10:20 And Jehu said, Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed
it. 10:21 And Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of Baal
came, so that there was not a man left that came not. And they came into
the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was full from one end to another.
10:22 And he said unto him that was over the vestry, Bring forth vestments
for all the worshippers of Baal. And he brought them forth vestments. 10:23
And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal,
and said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here
with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of Baal only.
10:24 And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu
appointed fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I have
brought into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, his life shall be
for the life of him. 10:25 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an
end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the
captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote
them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them
out, and went to the city of the house of Baal. 10:26 And they brought forth
the images out of the house of Baal, and burned them. 10:27 And they brake
down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a
draught house unto this day. 10:28 Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel."
18. Conspiracy by the Pharisees, Chief Priests, Scribes, Jewish Elders,
High Priests, the Council, false witnesses, and the Jews
Against Jesus Christ
"26:3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes,
and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was
called Caiaphas, 26:4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by
subtilty, and kill him."
"12:14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him,
how they might destroy him."
"26:59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false
witness against Jesus, to put him to death"
"11:47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council,
and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. 11:48 If we let
him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and
take away both our place and nation. 11:49 And one of them, named Caiaphas,
being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at
all, 11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should
die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not."
"6:12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes,
and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,
6:13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not
to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: 6:14 For
we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place,
and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us."
19. Conspiracy of the son of perdition, Judas Iscariot, with the Chief Priests
Against Jesus Christ
"26:14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went
unto the chief priests, 26:15 And said unto them, What will ye give me,
and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for
thirty pieces of silver. 26:16 And from that time he sought opportunity
to betray him."
20. Forty Jews conspire to slay Saint Paul
"23:12 And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together,
and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat
nor drink till they had killed Paul. 23:13 And they were more than forty
which had made this conspiracy. 23:14 And they came to the chief
priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse,
that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul. 23:15 Now therefore ye
with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto
you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning
him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him. 23:16 And when
Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into
the castle, and told Paul."
21. Conspiracy of the Jews to trick people into opposing the Gospel:
"Acts 13:50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable
women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against
Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts."
22. Conspiracy by the rulers and false prophets
Against Jeremiah
Jeremiah 18:18, "Then said they, Come and let us devise
devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest,
nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let
us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words."
