Editor's Note: Another commentary on the immigration issue, courtesy of our
good friend, Stephen Yulish.  Stephen brings out some valid points, as well
as a look at the issue through the eyes of an immigrant family, of which he
is a part.  We are receiving a lot of emails from our readers on this topic,
and the overwhelming majority of those emails are calling on the US
Governmental officials to enforce the laws on the books and require those
who are here illegally to go back to their country of origin and re-enter
the country legally - or not at all!

Let me add that these readers (like me) are not opposed to legal
immigration, even increasing the number of legal immigrants who are allowed
to enter the country each year - but they are STRONGLY OPPOSED to allowing
illegals to enter (and stay in) the US, receive goods and services, and be
granted amnesty for breaking the law.  I ask you to pray for wisdom for the
US leadership to make the tough decisions that need to be made, and to pray
for nation of America.

WE NEED TO SECURE OUR BORDERS!
By: Stephen Yulish PhD

Especially at this time in our nation's history, we need to secure our
borders. We need to prevent undocumented aliens from slipping through our
porous boundaries possibly bringing with them disease and suitcase nukes.
With the fear of a bird flu pandemic or another terrorist attack on American
soil, we need to be absolutely sure of the identity of everyone who enters
our country. The stakes now are higher than they ever have been in the past
and the very survival of our nation may be at risk. Already, the time to act
may be slipping through our fingers.

Let me make it very clear at the outset that I am not opposed to legal
supervised immigration. Our nation was built on the backs of the Irish, the
Italians, the Chinese, the Germans and all the other immigrants. I am the
son of a proud immigrant from Russia who first gazed happily at the Statue
of Liberty in New York harbor on November 1, 1923. In fact, while my father
was actually born on April 15, 1907, we always celebrated his birthday on
November 1! But when my father, his five brothers, two sisters and his
mother (his dad was already in America working as a carpenter) arrived at
Ellis Island, they were separated. My father's physical condition was a
little shaky and he was quarantined for several weeks while the rest were
let in.

When his condition improved, he was admitted. That is what we do not have
today with undocumented aliens. They are bringing in TB and whopping cough
which we have not seen in years. Imagine what could happen if the bird flu
pandemic strikes? They need to be checked and either be given a clean bill
of health or be denied entrance. It was a good rule for my father eighty
years ago and remains true today.

My father went to work in a cigar factory for $10 a week. He went to night
school to learn English. He worked hard and paid his taxes and eventually
bought a small fruit and vegetable store. He was the epitome of the American
dream. He loved this country. I can still hear my mother yelling, 'talk
English, Sam, this is America!' While my father never went to public school
and my mother only graduated from high school, I became a professor. In fact
all of his brothers were in the food business also but all their children,
my cousins, are doctors, lawyers and scientists. America provides an
unlimited ladder for success for those with talents who are willing to work.

Today, millions of undocumented aliens are streaming across our southern
border looking for this same American dream and you cannot blame them. But
as I said earlier, there are so many dangers lurking around the next corner
that we need to be vigilant. We need to secure our borders and have people
enter the old fashioned way, legally and have them inspected for disease,
criminality, and terrorist connections. We need to set up some kind of guest
worker program to provide for those people already here. If they want to
become US citizens they need to be vaccinated and immunized to protect us
all. They need to learn English and pay taxes as my father did. They need to
be given health benefits and disability and unemployment compensation like
all workers. They need not be exploited by American businessmen who want to
pay them wages under the table and provide them with no benefits or job
security.

In the late Fifties during the heyday of the Cold War, a cousin of mine
applied for a job with the Nuclear Energy Commission. The FBI did a
background check and found that he like me was a child of a Russian
immigrant. They followed him and found him coming out of the Russian Embassy
in New York. That photo was the family scandal of my youth. Everyone thought
our parents had two way radios in the attic and were talking with the Old
Country. Yeah right! My father was the most patriotic American you could
imagine (ala Archie Bunker with a Yiddish accent). He went ballistic when I
protested the Vietnam War and grew long hair.

Well it turned out that my cousin was a student at NYU and was doing a term
paper on the Soviet Union. He was cleared and eventually got the job. My
point is that now, fifty years later, we still need to be so vigilant.
Terrorists are trying to enter our country and inflict severe damage on our
way of life. In conclusion, America is a nation built upon the backs of its
poor, hard working immigrants. We should never turn our backs on these poor,
teeming masses yearning to be free, but we should secure our borders from
those who willingly or unwillingly have the potential to do us harm, and
have everyone go through a legal process of immigration including
inspection, selection and immunization.
