By running the TITAN2D avalanche model on various volcanoes worldwide, said Sheridan, geologists are already identifying safer zones where people can run if a searing "pyroclastic" flow or mudflow charges down a mountain.

An important feature of TITAN2D is that it doesn't take a supercomputer to run the simulation.

"We can run it on PCs and laptops," said Sheridan.

Geologists are already applying the program to danger zones in New Zealand, Mexico and Europe.
