Here in general is what I remember.  My husband says Jack VanImpe explained the anomoly of the Jewish calendar in the "missing" years some years ago.

In general it was that the Jews did not count the years they were out of the land of Israel.  The "missing" years were made up of two short periods of time and a much longer time.  When those years were added to the Jewish calendar it would be 6000 years.

There is something interesting too about the Egyptian calendar and their "year".  I remember thinking how strange the difference in the amount of years compared to the Jewish calendar.
