"Ratzinger: what's in a name?"

RATZINGER.  Does it have a meaning?

Having lived 10 years in Munich while Ratzinger was the Cardinal there, I got out my German dictionary.

When I first heard his name, I saw  RAT..ZINGER .

'Rat' in German is advisor, counselor.  As in City Hall:  Rathaus

In German, Jesus is 'der Ratgeber' (the one who gives counsel)...

BUT BUT BUT.. then I asked myself,

Is there a word RATZ in German?

There is.

It means "rat, marmot, polecat"...

Germans have an expression:  "Schalfen sie wie ein Ratz" (sleep like a log)
